OKAY, BACK FROM CLASS. IN SRSNESS.
FIRST OFF it will probably be easier if I do a brief rundown of how I see Mukuro's life going on canon. THE SHORT OF IT IS A SHITTY CHILDHOOD. The long of it is that not only was he part of a group that apparently EVERYONE ELSE HATED AND TRIED TO KILL but his family was also full of terrible. So there was the outside which was UNFRIENDLY and the inside was UNFRIENDLY. He was not an angry kid! Or even a kid that was like BLAGH KILL ALL THINGS or whatever. I am 90% convinced that he didn't think about killing everyone until he actually did, so none of that careful planning or whatever. The crazy + eye + situation just hit its peak.
One of the biggest themes in Mukuro's life seems to be "being stuck in a terrible place for an indeterminate amount of time with no escape". It is hilariously kind of an ongoing pattern with his life. CHILDHOOD FULL OF TORMENT => where there was no friendly faces, everyone hated you, no safety and if you escaped everyone still hated you. Then Vindice. And Hell. I guess. Whatever. THE POINT IS no support, no one cares, and the world shits on you constantly. So, Mukuro decides to shit back.

Mukuro is also someone who like. He isn't a conqueror! Honestly he isn't much of a leader either, despite the fact that he has "his group" and is often counted in the leaders when they're listed. There are things he wants and he clears out space for them and then he . . . flops out. He's a destroyer and also someone who can get pretty lonely :B I HAVE A LOT OF CANON THOUGHTS BUT THIS ESSAY ISN'T ABOUT THAT SO.
ALL RIGHT. LET'S TALK ABOUT AATHER!MUKURO.
First off let's discussing Ruby. Ruby, ruby, ruby, ruby. Ruby is super important to Mukuro. In fact, Ruby is the most important to Mukuro! This is a canon trait he has to (lolol see: kokuyou. His more roundabout way of dealing with Ken and Chikusa and the very very very very direct way dealing with Chrome). But he doesn't really have the same sort of distance from Ruby as he does from ~caring~ as much as he does in canon. So he can just flat out say it. I care about Ruby the most. This . . . unfortunately means that if you fuck with Ruby he will slowly drive you insane and then kill you. or. Something. Very protective over what is his.
There is also the idea of "Ruby" as a place where he "belongs" and wants to be! It is a metaphorical place, since the actual cabin doesn't matter. But it is the place he wants to be and actually has lots of feelings on ever losing that place. This isssssss kind of new? Not super different from canon (Kokuyou arc end is all about a place to be/belong/etc and it seems to be a general ~friendshipyayreborn~ thing) but Ruby . . . is more variable. Mukuro doesn't have instant security in it. It's, really, not his thing. It's lots of people's thing and he has to sort of. Work for it. Which is new and different :B; OR HE FEELS LIKE HE DOES. He's pretty aware of the "wow acedia is weird" thing and it has become almost a hyperawareness thing for him.
On the other hand! Mukuro is pretty sure if Ruby wanted him gone they would just so say. So he doesn't seek reassurance so much as he overthinks a lot of things and is more willing to offer any tokens of kindness or affection or whatever.
BLAH BLAH RUBY IS HIS HAPPY PLACE, NEVER LET GO, DON'T TOUCH IT OR I WILL SHANK YOU FIVE WAYS PAST SUNDAY, ETC.
Individually . . . He's been bouncing around a lot. IN ORDER OF HOW MUCH HE LIKES THEM/SEES THEM AS VITAL.
Ahiru is ALWAYS!!1 his absolute favorite but that is because he felt like she was giving him some kind of . . . idk. Acceptance. Which is really that Mukuro felt like she was giving him unconditional positive regard :B and listened to him. w-which. Well. She's a duck. THIS WILL ALL CHANGE WHEN HE FINDS OUT SHE IS A GIRL so stay tuned or whatever.
Dera . . . MIXED FEELINGS, HILARIOUSLY. On a personal level, their personalities don't really get on except for when they unite on something terrible. But Dera is the person who Mukuro feels most "gets" him -- also Dera is hilariously easy to use. And lie to. And manipulate. So Mukuro feels pretty positive about him.
Luke and Konatsu sort of occupy the same general space here. Mukuro sees Luke as less useful in general because Luke is always sad and kind of annoying and so forth. But he now kind of enjoys talking to Luke! They have real conversations and when Luke ISN'T BEING PUSHY AND OBNOXIOUS >:( they're kind of nice. On the flipside, Mukuro sees Konatsu as more useful but personally dislikes him more. HE'S KIND OF ... Mukuro is kind of five over Konatsu being like YOU TRADED WRATH LIKE PROPERTY!1 blah blah caring about teammates blah. Despite the fact that Mukuro himself was like :| I don't care. He somehow feels very irritated by the fact that Konatsu seemed to take that angle. BECAUSE HE IS DUMB AND FIVE.
Jacuzzi and Oz are sort of here by default. MUKURO IS STILL UNSURE WHAT TO DO WITH JACUZZI except I guess protect it because it cries a lot. And Oz . . . is new! Mukuro has to see value in people before he'll treat them better. On the other hand, Oz is still Ruby so he'd still shank people for him, etc.
But as much as Mukuro likes Ruby! The thing is! He doesn't feel any need to necessarily change himself for Ruby. He sees . . . the thing about Mukuro is that he can be somewhat smart. He is pretty good at people in his own way. If he were into empathy and compassion he'd be great at people. He is like a people person if you took away all the fluffy bits and replaced them with sulking and psychosis. And sometimes his vision gets obscured by selfishness. But anyway. The thing with Ruby is that while he can be SHAMED INTO BEHAVING via duck. Or he won't be AS MUCH OF AN ASS if need be for them or whatever. He doesn't internalize any of it or feel compelled to change! He would just be better at hiding his dickery or whatever. Become the better sociopathic sort of personality.
Mukuro's baseline is generalized apathy with a tug of wanting to belong and a general understanding of manipulation. He can be moved from that -- and ends up on the lolimanasshole scale with a lot of revenge driven goals in canon. He has no revenge goals in Aather! Aimlesssss.
OH RIGHT OKAY I DID RUBY SO NOW IT IS FEELINGS THING.
Mukuro is actually not a real no-feelings kid. HE IS A FAKE MEMBER OF THE NO-FEELINGS CLUB. I am guessing that in canon he just sort of critically analyzed himself and cut out whatever wasn't useful/what made him weak and went along with that. Not that he doesn't feel those emotions still, but Mukuro is very very very good at dividing himself up (lol) and ignoring parts of himself.
In a lot of ways feelings in general are a foreign language. HE KNOWS THEY MEAN THINGS TO OTHER PEOPLE but doesn't get an immediate feeling/meaning from them himself. Sort of. Except he does FEEL SOMETHING it just . . . he can't match it up right. X FEELING => idk what that is, sociopathic response. And then because he is A THINKER sometimes he will grab onto what he assumes is the correct pattern of thinking, overlay it with the emotion and be like \o/ oh that is what is going on. ... he is just wrong. About that. Sometimes.
Mukuro is also in/was in a big stage of experimentation! Nothing really satisfied him or made him feel really "happy" so he tried some things out. Being a dick to people was actually a great release of aggression and frustration and made him feel good! He also liked the marginal feel of power over others. Playing with Riful is a challenge and it's exciting and he wasn't sure what that other feeling was -- tho now he is pretty sure it is fear.
SO WHAT MUKURO REALLY NEEDED WAS FOR SOMEONE TO BE LIKE ... well, mostly just be supportive and patient. Ennntterrrr Souya.
One of the things to note about Mukuro! When he talks to people he's usually feeling through conversations -- follows things that interest him, can toss up screens if he wants, blah blah. Very rarely is he just having an organic conversation unless it's like philosophical in nature, then he is a bit more laid back. He likes to try and gauge other people's assumptions of him! And then he judges them on their responses or tailors his own response to their assumption. This allows him to keep his more 'real' self sort of out of the picture as well as manipulate them \m/
... Souya somehow passes all of these little hidden conversational traps. s...somehow. And it helps that Souya sort of . . . Mukuro has never felt JUDGED!1 And Souya hasn't gone back on his word, yet. And is sort of generally there and helpful and it is like \o/ what is going on I don't even! Mukuro had this feeling that Souya was just doing it because it would be easier for everyone/safer for other people/blah blah. THIS IS JUST A MOVE TO MANIPULATE ME INTO BEING LESS VIOLENT ISN'T IT :"|! But that sort of went away because Souya kept talking to him and answering questions or asking the right questions.
It. Mukuro doesn't know what to do with support like that. Or relations like that. He has no memories of adult figures. Kokuyou has always operated under him as a group. Even when he was dealing with Lancia (which he doesn't remember, but still) it was all carefully calculated and Mukuro didn't approach it as a real relation anyway. The world is full of terrible things! Everything is inescapable blood and terribleness! No one wants to help you up. (This is different than how he feels general Ruby as he views Ruby as people on the same level/position as him, and they move together. But since Souya is a knight it is SOMEONE FROM A DIFFERENT GROUP/WHATEVER/THE OUTSIDE offering a hand and it's very... weird...)
So Souya has been BUILDING WINNING AT MUKURO CREDIT passing all the tests, etc. Helping Mukuro by giving him SHIT TO DO in ways to relieve boredom and so forth. BEING NICE 8(;;;
annnddd then Riful broke Mukuro's knee! And Souya was very very very calm about it and helped Mukuro ... lie to his team ... and in general was just. MUKURO FELT SOME GUILT THAT DAY (along with like 47 other emotions). But it pretty much solidified that Souya was good people and that's probably the point when Mukuro decided he could trust Souya. WHICH IS A BIG THING! Because Mukuro doesn't trust like. Anyone. In canon. Those who are close enough to be trusted are clearly weaker than him (to him) so it is kind of moot. Except Chrome, who he needs etc COMPLICATED WHATEVER.
Basically Mukuro has thought out every possible angle (he thinks) to why Souya is a good person and can't find a manipulative thread in it. Also ... they talk like every day. It has just sort of become a thing. A constant nice thing. And since Mukuro has no real moral compass of his own he's . . . sort of adapted a "How disappointed would Souya be in me :|a" scale. And then measures his own desire against it.
ON THE OTHER OTHER HAND. MUKURO DOESN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THIS! Every time he gets affection from Souya he feels kind of deer in the headlights. what is this feeling so sudden and new. In general hairruffle and draping is a :|a reaction from him.
EXCEPT NOW SOUYA HAS SHOWN MUKURO TWO OF HIS MEMORIES. WHERE SOUYA IS A COMPLETE MORON. ... and Mukuro is like " ... I. ... he's an idiot. I ... I trust an idiot... I don't..." and is developing some kind of weird halfway tsun response to it. noooo topped by an idiotttt.
OKAY I AM GETTING REALLY TIRED THINGS IN BULLET POINTS:
• FEELINGS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPING or rather Mukuro has been letting himself be less divorced from them. They are still confusing and really he is like rgggg nooo but he is also sorting them through and it is. Sort of happening.
• IN GENERAL Mukuro is the philosophizing kind of bastard when he isn't doing other stuff. This has nothing to do with anything except that he is a thinker and likes talking about that shit sometimes.
• Souya has suggested that he use his manipulation skillz!1 for good. Mukuro is unsure how he feels about this, but figures he could try.
• Souya also suggested spacing out taking his memories. Which he might do. After the next batch. Because he has to take the next memory and then lie to Wrath about what it is so he can be like. all casual like. So. I remembered we're enemies. Yeah.
• Mukuro has developed a weird anxiety/worry (not like A HUGE ONE!1 but it is present enough) about Ruby. And knowing that he and Wrath were on OPPOSITE SIDES!!!!1 and lol tsuna and stuff. It's worrisome.
• On the other hand, the sort of relation he has right now with Ruby he really really really likes. And wants to hold onto foreverrrrr.
• Mukuro still kind of want so to bully Gil. But he also had fun on their "date" so is kind of zen with not being as much of an asshole as he could be.
