silentknight: (There is one way to ask her)

I would say her biggest fear in Aather is not being able to protect her team and friends sufficiently. This is different than what I think her fear at home is! I think her biggest fear in canon is killing someone again. This is especially highlighted in her altercation with a villain named Shadowthief. She accidentally takes the fight too far and is so distraught by the chance that she's done irreparable harm that she can't even perform CPR and Spoiler has to come in and do that for her. He ends up living but Cassie is so traumatized by the encounter that she just leaves to go brood. Even when she's 'rejected' in canon (when Batman fires her and tries to force to live a civilian life) she is upset but finds work-arounds. When she thinks she's killed someone? Total shutdown.

However, because of her development in Aather, the first real defining experience was bonding with a set of people (and the concept of Peridot) instead of killing someone, so that became the thing she felt the need to protect wholly. She still has a very strong aversion to killing people and is still really affected by that experience, but now it ranks slightly below "team and close bonds". She's worried she can't protect them like she should be able to and is having a hard time giving up to the idea that she just can't. Hence the near-constant atonement/sacrifice thing she has going. She just doesn't know how to protect them from goings-on and games, so she tries to insist on taking the brunt of things as much as possible-- even when it's not strictly necessary that it happen at all. It's kind of like overachieving to prove how much she would do for them, whether they like it or not. But she's also really horrifically scared of not having the opportunity to do that for them. She loves her team so much that if it were better for them that she not be involved, she would end up removing herself from the situation, but it would have to be very grave. She wants to do the right thing so bad… but sometimes her idea of the "right thing" is very different from the norm. Being rejected from the group would hinder her ability to protect them… plus she just genuinely likes her team and friends.

Who is Acedia's best influence in aather?
